Easy Bak Kut Teh (Malaysian Herbal Pork Rib Soup)

Serves 4–6 | Ready in 1–1½ Hours

Ingredients

  • 1 packet Tean's Gourmet Bak Kut Teh Herbs & Spices Premix (35g)
  • 1 kg (2.2 lb) pork ribs
  • 2 liters (8 cups) water
  • 8–10 cloves garlic (leave whole, peeled)
  • 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon dark soy sauce (optional, for color)
  • Salt and white pepper to taste

Optional Ingredients

  • Mushrooms (shiitake or button)
  • Fried tofu puffs
  • Enoki mushrooms
  • Napa cabbage

 

Instructions

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil and blanch the pork ribs for 2–3 minutes. Drain and rinse.
  2. In a clean pot, add the pork ribs, 2 liters of water, and the whole garlic cloves.
  3. Add the entire packet of Tean's Gourmet Bak Kut Teh Herbs & Spices Premix.
  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 60–90 minutes, until the ribs are tender.
  5. Stir in the light soy sauce and dark soy sauce (if using).
  6. Add mushrooms, tofu puffs, or other optional ingredients during the last 10–15 minutes of cooking.
  7. Taste and season with salt and white pepper if needed.
  8. Serve hot.
